In both cases, the subfloor must be completely smooth (leveled), that no unevenness of the substrate show through the flooring surface.
Vinyl flooring comes in many different designs: imitation wood, tiles, granite, textiles etc. The surfaces can be smooth to the touch or with indentations of different textures. Compared with wood floors, vinyl flooring is more resistant to wear and indentations. They are not affected by the change of air humidity (shrinkage, swelling), but do react to major changes in temperature. Vinyls are sensitive to direct (strong) sunlight, which can cause dimensional and color change. Floors made of vinyl coverings are not waterproof unless the contacts are welded. They are suitable for installation on underfloor heating.
The downside of PVC-based vinyl is that PVC can release certain harmful substances (VOC) after installation even if in very small quantities. In addition, in the production, plasticizers, stabilizers and other additives are used which are generally harmful to the health. Therefore, it makes sense to check which health certificates apply to your vinyl flooring before buying it. Wear resistance and durability of vinyl depends on the thickness of the wearing layer, which should be 0.30 mm for residential areas and 0.40 mm or more for commercial use.
